| Research on my wife's family was initially inspired by a sense of guilt, since I had so little compared to my own family records. I started with material given me by my mother-in-law, Marjorie I Kirkman, née Clifford (M.I.K.). | |||||

| Rosa and William were the children of Henry's first marriage. William was killed in action in World War I, at the battle of the Somme. Raymond also saw action as a young soldier but returned uninjured. Gertrude, "Auntie G", was the second of five sisters, followed by Irene, Vi and Edna. At the time of the census Nelle was evidently staying with relatives, probably to allow her mother more time for the new baby. | |||||
This photo shows the butcher's shop, seemingly garlanded for a special occasion. Annie is standing in the doorway, Nelle on the left and Raymond (aged about 4) in the middle.

A wedding photograph of Marjorie and George Kirkman. The chevrons on his sleeve indicate the rank of Master Sergeant.
This is about the only surviving picture of George Kirkman with his children (Edward, Jane, Marcus and Howard). Grandfather Raymond Clifford is on the left. The background is Wentwood, a large area of wooded hilly country a few miles east of Newport and a favourite picnic site. Jane remembers that the children always built dams across one of the little streams. She and I also took our sons there when visiting. |
