Family of Robert 4 Bridge of Sandhurst, 1766-1855
Robert's life is well defined by church and chapel records but the link to the Smarden family rests simply on the fact that Robert 4 was born in the right place, two years after the marriage of Robert 3, and was (as expected for the first son) named after his father. Furthermore, both were builders and both Particular Baptists, which is why there are no records of infant baptisms.

Family of James Bridge of Sandhurst, 1798-1846

It seems that James was the nephew of Robert 4; there is clearly a connection with the Particular Baptist tradition and James's daughter Sarah lived with (or visited) Robert. It is probable but not certain that James was the son of Simon in Wittersham; that family is now linked to the Smarden family by y-dna tests and Simon is almost certainly the third son of Robert 3.

Linda Walker is a gg-grand-daughter of James and has sent me a number of pictures and information about more recent events. Data from her is indicated by (LW).

Eclampsia is caused by antigens released from the placenta into the mother's bloodstream, causing multiple organ failure and characterised by convulsions. It follows that Ellen must have been in labour for three days without delivering the baby, stillborn or otherwise. After this, it is hardly surprising that George never remarried.

Haverhill fire

17 Sep 1918. The aftermath of a haystack fire at Hazelstubb Farm, Haverhill, Suffolk. George is standing in the centre of the picture (marked with small +).

A cutting from the South West Suffolk Echo saved with this photo reads:

Hazelstubb Farm, Haverhill, was the scene of a destructive stack fire on Tuesday evening. About half-past seven the stacks were seen to be on fire, and the alarm was given for the Volunteer Fire Brigade, which attended very promptly under Capt. D. M. Gurteen and Lieut. H. B. Thake. On their arrival they found that six stacks standing in a double row were involved to such an extent that it was hopeless to attempt to save any of them. With a plentiful supply of water and a large number of helpers on the engine, they therefore concentrated their attention towards saving three barley stacks, cowshed, barns, stabling, &c, which they succeeded in doing. Between the two rows of blazing stacks were an engine, barnworks and chaffcutter. The engine was saved after much difficulty, — a young man named Metcalfe being severely scorched in the process, — but the other implements were soon reduced to scrap iron and charred wood. Near by, though not quite in the danger zone, were two hay stacks and the homestead. ... As the engine was working during the day it is conjectured that a spark was the cause of the outbreak. ...

Immediately following the article was this advertisement:

Fire. — Are you properly insured? If not, Thomas Jarvis, Agent for the Norwich Union Fire Office, will be pleased to give you assistance in putting your insurance on a proper footing. Telephone No. 16.

The photograph and newspaper report were saved by the family. George seems to be a long way from Kent but his son Aaron lived in Edmonton, Middlesex, and George may have wanted to move closer to them. With the onset of war labour would have been at a premium and George could well have returned to farm work, possibly just to help with the harvest. The choice of Haverhill is most likely explained by the fact that his daughter-in-law Bertha had relations there.

Family tradition has it that he later walked to Edmonton (about 50 miles) where he died the following year.

Oliver seems not to have joined the army until after his marriage but presumably had done so before moving to Colchester, before the birth of Helen. The family is not found in the 1901 census but the reason is apparent from the 1911 return: Oliver had been stationed in Ireland, where Arthur was born. In the census, R.F.A. stands for Royal Field Artillery
