In the name of God Amen the twentieth day of the month of March AD1470/1
I Giles Bregge of the parish of Headcorn being composed of mind and of sound memory make my testament in this fashion.

First I leave my soul to almighty God and my body to be buried in the churchyard at Headcorn aforesaid.
Also I leave the high altar of the same church 6d.
Also the light of St Mary Virgin there 4d.
Also chrism for my godson : 4d.
Residuum vero omnium cattalorum meorum non legatorum do & lego Godleve uxori mee et ipsam Godlevam una cum Johanne Bregge fratre meo facio et ordino esse meos executores. Residue in truth of all my chattels not bequeathed I give and leave to Godleve my wife and the same Godleva together with John Bregge my brother I make and ordain to be my executors
Hec est ultima voluntas Egidii Bregge de Hedecrone facta ibidem xxmo die mensis marcii Anno Domini millesimo ccccmo septuagesimo feoffatis suis de omnibus terris & tenementis suis This is the last will of Egidius (Giles) Bregge of Headcorn made there the 20th day of the month of March AD 1470 to his feoffees of all his lands and tenements
In primo dictus Egidius vult quod statim post decessum suum feoffati sui vendent duas pecias interiores a Regia strata ibidem de illis tribus peciis prati vocatis lakemedes meliori precio quo poterint First the said Egidius wills that immediately after his death his feoffees sell two pieces of land separated by the King’s road there from those three pieces of meadow called Lakemedes for the best price which they can
et pecunia inde recepta volo quod deliberetur executoribus meis et & quod executores mei solvant debita mea & perimpleant legata mea
Et quicquid remanserit de predicta pecia volo & lego Godeleve uxore mee suo proprio usui
and the money received therefrom I will that it be delivered to my executors and that my executors settle my debts and fulfill my legacies.
And whatever remains of the aforesaid money I will and leave to Godeleve my wife for her sole use.

Also I leave for sharing and distribution on the day of my burial and the day of the month 8s 4d.

Item volo quod Godleva uxor mea habebit mesuagium meum cum gardino & crofto eidem annexatis ad totum terminum vite sue & post decessum ipsius Godleve volo quod deliberentur meis proximis legittimis heredibus in feodo simplice Also I will that Godeleve my wife is to have my messuage with the gardens and croft annexed to it for the full term of her life and after the death of the said Godeleve I will that it be passed to my nearest legitimate heir in fee simple.
Item volo quod feoffati mei permittant dictam Godlevam percipere & habere proficuum & occupationem duarum peciarum terre mee vocatarum halynghamy & alteram peciam terre vocatam lakemed’ quousque filius meus pervenerit ad etatem octodecim annorum Also I will that my feoffees permit the said Godleve to take and have the profits and occupancy of two pieces of my land called Halynghamy and another piece of land called Lakemede up until my son comes to the age of eighteen years
& tunc volo quod filius meus habeat proficuum dictum trium peciarum terre & prati quousque venerit ad etatem viginti duorum annorum et tunc volo quod deliberantur dicto filio meo in feodo simplice and then I will that my son have the said profits of the three pieces of land and pasture until he comes to the age of twenty two years and then I will that they be delivered to my son in fee simple.
Proviso tum quod infra duos annos proximos post dictam etatem & deliberacionem factam & habitam Volo que dictus filius meus solvat aut solvi faciat filie vel filiabus meis xl s Provided that within the next two years after the said age and delivery is made and had, I will that my said son pay or arrange payment to my daughter or daughters of 40 s.
Et si contingat filium meum obiret infra etatem ita quod voluntatem suam de terris predictis facere non poterit tunc volo quod minor pecia de predicto halynghamys & dicta pecia prati deliberentur filie vel filiabus meis cum venerint ad etatem predictam viginti duorum annorum Et altera pecia terre de halynghamys erit Godleve uxori mee ad totum terminum vite sue And if it happens that my son dies under the said age so that his wishes for the said lands have no effect then I will that the smaller piece of the said Halynghamys and the said pasture are passed to my daughter or daughters when they come to the said age of twenty two years And the other piece of land at Halynghamys will be to Godleve my wife for the whole term of her life
Et si contingat omnes filios & filias meas obire infra etatem talem ita quod voluntatem de terris & tenementis predictis legitime facere non poterit & sine heredibus de corporibus suis legitime procreatis quod tunc volo quod Godleva uxor mea habebit omnia terras & tenementa mea predicta ad totum terminum vite sue And if it happens that all my sons and daughters die under the said age so that their wills for the lands and tenements aforesaid have no legal effect and without heirs of their bodies lawfully begotten then I will that Godleva my wife shall have all my lands and tenements aforesaid for the whole term of her life
Et post decessum ipsius Godleve volo quod omnia terre & tenementa predicta deliberabuntur Johanni Bregge & Ricardo Bregge fratribus meis heredibus & assignatis suis imperpetuum And after the death of the same Godleva I wish that the aforesaid lands and tenements are passed to John Bregge and Richard Bregge my brothers and their heirs and assigns forever
Proviso tamen quod dicti Johannes & Ricardus heredes sive Assignati sui solvant aut solvi faciant feoffatis mei dicti Egidii vel Assignatis eorum infra unum annum post decessum ipsius Godleve in Ecclesia parochiali de Hedecrone xl s Provided however that the said John and Richard their heirs or assigns pay or cause to be paid to the feoffees of me the said Egidius or their assigns within one year after the death of the same Godleva in the parish church of Headcorn 40 s
Et volo quod ipsi feoffati vel eorum assignati disponant dicti xl s prout eis melius videbitur expedire And I will that the same feoffees or their assigns dispose of the said 40s as seems to them most expedient

Probatum fuit predictum testamentum septimo die mensis April Anno domini millesimo ccccmo lxxijmo & Comissa est administrandum executoribus in eodem testamento supranominatis The will aforesaid was proved on the 7th day of the month of April 1472 and it was committed to be administered to the executors named above in the same will
